The best fish for fish ponds in Stardew Valley

stardew valley pufferfish

Fish Ponds are a great way to passively acquire resources to sell in the Market to craft new items in Stardew Valley. You can throw fish in them and gradually increase their population to reap the fruits of your farm. Some of the fish are better than others, however, depending on what they produce and how much population you have in the pond. Here are some of the best fish you can have in a fish pond in Stardew Valley.

It is important to note that at different times the fish will have quest icons above their fish ponds for you to complete. If you don’t supplement them you can’t increase their population, so be sure to check their ponds every few days to see what they need from you. These quests revolve around giving the fish a particular item.

Blobfish

These aren’t the prettiest fish you want to see in your garden, but they do a lot more for you than their appearance suggests.

Blobfish are great for fish ponds because they produce a decent amount of eggs when you have six in a pond. They also have a chance to knock down Chain Totems, which teleport you directly to your farm, or they can produce Pearls, which you can sell for 2,500 Gold. You must have at least nine Blobfish in a pond to produce the rarest items.

To catch a Blobfish you have an even more limited window of time than just winter. You can only catch them during the Night Market, which is an event that takes place at the beach from the 15th to the 17th of winter. You must attend the night market and take a submarine ride, which takes you deep sea fishing, a rare opportunity to catch an array of rare fish. If you find a Blobfish, be sure to take it home and add it to your fish pond to start reaping the benefits.

Here are the potential quests for the Blobfish that appear every four days to increase their population:

  • One population: three corals, two frozen tears or two sea urchins
  • Three populations: five coffee beans, a mayonnaise or a pizza
  • Five inhabitants: a cookie, a green tea or a wine
  • Seven inhabitants: a rainbow shell or a rice pudding

Midnight squid

Just like the Blobfish, the Midnight Squid is another type of fish that you can catch at the night market. It only happens during the winter of 15-17, so you need to make sure you get on this submarine whenever you have a chance to try and catch the most fish.

You want to add a fish pond to them because they have the ability to produce squid ink. The more population you have in the pond, the more likely you are that squid ink will recur. If you have 10 midnight squid swimming in your pond, you have the option of dropping two cuttlefish inks at the same time. You can use squid ink for dyeing clothes, sewing, and creating sea foam pudding.

Here are the potential quests for the Midnight Squid that appear every three days to increase their population:

Three populations: three corals or 2 sea urchins
Five inhabitants: two sardines
Eight inhabitants: a stone from the ocean

Scary fish

Another fish that you might come across on the night market submarine ride is the ghost fish. It’s a blue fish with big, wide eyes that make it look like you’re crushing it too hard. Despite its appearance, it is a valuable fish, and when you catch it you want to rethink it to throw it away or sell it in the market. Just like the Midnight Squid and the Blobfish, you can only catch it during Tourniquet 15 and 17 during the Night Market.

Notably, there is nothing too special about what the creepy fish produce in their pond. It reliably contains eggs like all other fish, even with a single population inside the fish pond. However, what sets it apart from the rest is that it has a very low chance of producing a Treasure Chest when you have a population of nine or more Ghost Fish.

The treasure chest is full of valuable items that you can sell in the market for 5,000 gold. Due to the scarcity of the treasure chest, it doesn’t hurt to have a spooky fish pond on your farm to give you a low chance to cash it every now and then. If you have room on your farm, why not?

Here are the potential quests for the Spook Fish that appear every four days to increase their population:

  • Three populations: three amethysts, three corals, three iron bars, one oyster, three red mushrooms or three refined quartz
  • Five populations: one dried starfish, two emeralds, one granite, two omni geodes or two purple mushrooms
  • Seven inhabitants: a diamond, three gold bars, an iridium ore, a mayonnaise or a pickle

Sturgeon

The sturgeon is probably the easiest fish to catch on this list. You can find them during the summer and winter months outside the cave entrance, along the river that comes out of the mountain. Try to find a spot where you can cast your line far into the water and away from the shore. They are difficult to catch even if you know the best place to look for them, but they are worth adding to a fish pond.

A sturgeon does not offer the same variety as other fish when it resides in a fish pond. However, they do provide sturgeon eggs, which you can place inside a canning jar for four days and squeeze them out to become caviar. None of the other fish that can produce eggs can turn it into caviar, making it a staple on any Stardew Valley farm. You can sell each piece of caviar for 500 gold.

Here are the potential quests for the Sturgeon that appear every four days to increase their population:

  • One population: one diamond
  • Three populations: one jelly, two maple syrup or a pickle
  • Five inhabitants: three omni geodes
  • Seven populations: a nautilus shell

Void Salmon

A scarier fish to add to your farm is Void Salmon. You can capture at any time of the year. However, you must first complete the Black Talisman quest to gain access to the Witch’s Swamp. The quest is only available after completing all Community Center bundles or Joja’s Community Development Form.

You can find Witch’s Swamp on the east side of the station north of town. To complete the Black Talisman quest, you need to talk to the Wizard to get Magical Ink from his ex-wife, but you need to talk to Krobus about using a Black Talisman to access it. After completing this particular quest, you should have access to the swamp for the rest of the game.

Void Salmon is a great fish to add to a pond if you are looking to acquire Void gasoline on a semi-regular basis. You have to wait until you have more than eight inhabitants, and that’s a small chance, but it can happen. You can also loot empty eggs and eggs there, which are always good to have. You can use empty eggs to make an empty chicken to create even more empty eggs, or use them in a variety of different recipes.

Here are the potential quests for the Void Salmon that appear every four days to increase their population:

  • One population: five empty essences
  • Three populations: 10 bat wings
  • Five populations: a diamond or an empty egg
  • Seven populations: an iridium ore

Any fish you catch in Stardew Valley can go live inside your fish pond. Explore all of the different varieties to find the right assortment that fits your needs in order to produce the best farm you are capable of producing in Stardew Valley.
